There’s a story out this morning from Jim Bronskill from the Canadian Press that made me rise an eyebrow as it goes against everything we know from law enforcement and the data.
It states that 71% of RCMP traced crime guns are domestically sourced. That was shocking to read so we did a little digging into the numbers.

Here’s the truth:
Data published by Stats Canada in a report titled 'Firearms and violent crime in Canada' 2023', "Where these data were available, more than 9 in 10 (92%) incidents of firearm-related violent crime did not involve the recovery of a firearm."

A report from Public Safety Canada as recent as March 11, 2025, says
"Less than 20% of firearms seized by police are sent for tracing." ... what about the other 80%+?

So if you’re still following – that’s 20% of the 8% of all crime guns retrieved.
Now, that brings us to about 1.6% of crime guns traced in all.
So 71% of that 1.6% is about 1.1% of crime guns being domestically sourced, which sounds about right from what we’ve heard from law enforcement for decades.
The story clearly states that the 1.1% INCLUDES "ghost guns" which are illegally manufactured (usually 3-D printed) guns and they account for 67%.
How many of the remaining were even guns? How many were toys? BB guns?
That leaves us with a grand total of 0.74% domestically sourced from our community, by one means or another, meaning stolen from owners or gun shops or otherwise diverted.
All of this is publicly available information provided to us by the government themselves, but ironically absent from Jim’s story.
I’ll let you figure out why …
And remember, even that 1.1% includes things that aren’t even guns like toy guns, replicas, airsoft and bb guns, and none of that includes the two most populous provinces, Quebec and Ontario.
Why would he leave all that out of the story?
Why do other reporters like Judy have tweets like this still up?

I think there’s one thing we can all agree on – if the Liberals cancelled the gun grab and invested that money in law enforcement to be able to retrieve more guns, and in firearms labs to be able to trace more of those retrieved guns, we’d have better, clearer information and we wouldn’t have to rely on skewed data to support narratives.
And, of course, none of this would be impacted by Liberal gun bills, gun bans or handgun freezes. That's the real tragedy here.
The cynic in me can't help but make note of the timing of this story, the day after the extension of the amnesty for the gun grab. Was this co-ordinated?
