The Liberal government extended the long running amnesty for expired PAL holders earlier this year for one more term, ending December 31, 2017. Learn more about the amnesty and it's historical extensions here: AMNESTY ENDING

That amnesty extension is complete at the end of the calendar year 2017, before which gun owners must get in compliance with licensing requirements.

What's new is the government implementing a 6 month grace period to be implemented  following the ending of the amnesty. This measure was originally to be a part of C-42 but was not implemented by the Tories as the amnesty took it's place. Gun owners in a state of expiry will not be able to make purchases but mere possession of firearms and ammo will not be a criminal offence. The grace period will NOT apply to existing expirees prior to November 30, 2017.

There is an amnesty in place now until December 31, 2017. You must be licensed by then or face criminal charges. Going forward any new expirees will have a 6 month grace period to be compliant.

CAUTION: if your expiry date is more than 6 months old as of January 1, 2018, you are not protected under these provisions.
